INTIMATE
PARTNER VIOLENCE: PHYSICAL, SEXUAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL VICTIMS AND OFFENDERS:
ASSESSMENT INTERVENTION AND TREATMENT
Many of us do not expect to repeat patterns from our childhood; yet, the wounds of domestic violence are deep. The trauma is something that needs serious attention, cognitive and behavioral awareness and deep healing before can be released. The figures and estimates in this course are only this, figures and estimates. There continues to be a great deal of shame and secrecy associated with this clinical challenge. The psychological, emotional, physical and spiritual issues are complex, confusing and often frustrating. It is estimated by some sources that it takes an average of five attempts for a victim to leave and abusive partner. We may not be the clinician that supports this client through all five attempts. We may just be one of the support people along the way It is common that when a client returns to an abusive partner they discontinue relationships wherein their secret is held as they reach for stability one more time in the arms of their abuser. as clinicians, we must be diligent to investigate , support and treat this underreported and complicated clinical and social issue. In this course we will look at the scope of the problem, the implications for intervention and treatment with victims and offenders and the children who may have borne witness to the event.
