INTRODUCTION

Joy arises from deep within snaking its way through your body, infusing your spirit until it bursts forth with the loudest guffaw or the serenest of smiles. As children on a summer’s afternoon, many of us have known the feeling of total involvement and bliss when watching the clouds gliding by in their endless transformation of shape. No place to go. Nothing to do: a total immersion in the moment.  As adults, we often lose these moments.   We may cite joyous highlights like marriage or first love or the birth of children, but the simple daily experience of joy may be rare.  This paper draws upon the author’s many years in the world of the healing arts to explore transpersonal models of development in relation to the opening of the creative spirit and the reawakening of joyful spirit.  As clinicians, we might view our client's developmental level of consciousness as we explore their challenges and block to experiencing joy.

In the observation of the human life cycle, there are different stages of development: physical, emotional, social, psychological and spiritual. In the developmental process of conscious awakening, there lies a challenge to stay true to the miracle of living.  As we progress from the unbounded experiences of early childhood, we are introduced to a greater number of rules, guidelines and restrictions of daily living that may detract from our ability to experience pure joy.  As adults, it is when our hearts are open and we take time to express our true creative natures, unbound by expectation or commitments, that we are most likely to experience the moments of joy.  Paradoxically, it may be through the resolution of hardship that we become reacquainted with the joy of simplicity.  In the words of Aeschylus, There is no pain so great as the memory of joy in present grief.

In this course ,we will review the work of Abraham Maslow on self actualization and peak experiences, explore the ideas of Dr. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, author of Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, and Martin Seligman, noted psychologist and author of many works promoting Positive Psychology, and compare the works of transpersonal practitioners, Hillevi Ruumet, Deepak Chopra and David Frawley on the evolution of human consciousness and possible connections between the experience of joy with the development of consciousness. An Appendix is included correlating these ideas with Erik Erikson psychosocial model of development.
