Small Voices: Treating Stress, Anxiety and Depression in Youth

As our world gains greater speed through technology and opportunity, our children are spending more time in the care of others and increased time in lessons, tutoring, before and after school programs and extracurricular activities.  In our practice the families, while providing enormously enriching activities are often at the brink of over scheduling.  There is an increase in the diagnosis of ADD/ADHD and Bipolar Disorder in youth.  Symptoms of depression are occurring and stress related to school incidents and current events are on the rise.  As we approach the anniversary of Sept 11 we will likely to be inundated with images and stories reflecting the horror and grief of that day.  It would probably be less likely not to be experiencing a fair level of stress, anxiety, and pressure at this time. So, how do we address these issues for our children and youth?  What are the special issues facing this population?
