Divisions within cultures can be as challenging as divisions across culture.  However, mental health concerns do not discriminate.  Mental illness is found across the country, across social class, and across culture. According the World Health organization, in developed countries like the United States, mental health issues rank second only to cardiovascular disease as a leading cause of disability.  When addressing cultural competence in mental health, we need to consider access, definition, and communication.  If we do not understand the language, the cultural values, beliefs and traditions of our clients, we will not be well equipped to diagnose or treat their issues.   Let us agree that not all people from any class, race, ethnicity, or neighborhood behave in the same ways in the same circumstances.   We can say that all people are created equal; yet, we must not be blind to the privilege that is inherent in being a member of the dominant culture. The categories used to describe groups of people are imperfect, but we must do our best to understand the impact of color in our society and understand and respect the added challenges and pressures our society adds to the life of individuals.   In this course you will be introduced to standards for cultural competence, review the Surgeon’s General Report of Race, Ethnicity and Mental Health and explore resources for greater understanding of the cultures, who comprise your community, your practice and your life.
